Navajo Horse Hair Pottery Vase - Signed
Navajo Horse Hair Pottery Vase - Signed
From painted desert hues of the Red Mesas and the shifting desert sands a new type of pottery was born. Bands of color are applied to the vessel, then, with an etching tool, the delicate designs are inscribed. For a contrast a glazed section completes the process.
Horse Hair Pottery is made by using hair from a horse's mane. The thick lines are created using the tail hairs. After the pot is fired, it is rock polished. When the firing and the rough polishing is completed, deerskin, elk hide and/or stones are used to complete the polish. Each pot is original, unique and made by Native American Crafters.
This handmade Navajo Horsehair Pottery vase was made by Skeeter Vail and he has signed it on the bottom (see picture).
It stands 3-1/2 inches high and wide.
A delightful piece to display!
