Simpson, Hall & Miller Antique Hand Cut Glass and Silver Vanity Jar
This antique jar is a beautiful example of American talent with cut glass and a silversmith's skills.
The piece is in excellent condition overall but with a small chip on the inside rim of the jar. (See Photo) It is not visible when the Sterling top is in place. No other defects could be found on the glass or lid.
It measures 3 inches high by 3-1/2 inches in diameter. The lid measures 1-1/8 inches high by 2-5/8 inches wide.
The hallmark is (I believe) from the 1895 period.
Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. was a silver manufacturer in Wallingford, Connecticut, founded in 1866. By circa 1895, the company operated large factories in Wallingford and Montreal, Canada.
Many designs have been collected by many American museums including the Dallas Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Yale University Art Gallery. In 2005-07, Modernist silver designs by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. were featured in a traveling museum exhibition (Dallas, Washington, Miami Beach, Reno and Memphis).
The designs have been exhibited since the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition.[4] In 1880-81, Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. was awarded the First Prize Medal competing with 44 other silver manufacturers from the United States and Europe at the Melbourne International Exhibition in Australia.
A nice collector's specimen to add to a collection.
